My Dear Friend of Democracy,
We might be disappointed about the outcome of the US election. About white men voting a man into the presidency who offered a regressive idea of masculinity in which power over women is a birthright.
But you can also put it this way: A generation ago, it was unthinkable that a black woman would run for president. This has become pretty normal in the USA, and almost half of the American people voted for her.
So, the times are changing (even if it doesn't look like that at first glance). They have always been. Luther's reformation. The Enlightenment. There has been much social progress. It has always taken time. And there have always been setbacks. Setbacks belong to progress.
✊ Therefore, I am pretty sure that in the not-too-distant future, the people of the USA will look back on this man, Donald Trump, and will not be able to understand how the majority wanted him to be president. Trump will then be an example of the reactionary development that has always been part of social progress. But above all, people will think of him what many already know today: that Donald Trump is a man of yesterday.
See you in Europe,
Johannes
