Dear Friends of Democracy,
Germany is moving to the right. This is not just a feeling, it is also empirically proven. Right-wing extremist and anti-democratic attitudes are significantly more widespread in Germany than in previous years. This is a central result of the study “Die Distanzierte Mitte” (The Distant Middle) from Bielefeld University, Germany.
At the same time, the authors of the study observe that trust in democracy has decreased significantly – while conspiracy-believing positions are becoming significantly more widespread. One in five people agreed with the statement: “Our country now looks more like a dictatorship than a democracy” (2020/21: 16 per cent each). Trust in the institutions and the functioning of democracy fell to below 60 per cent.
This is bad news.
Only Winston Churchill's cynicism can help me out today:
“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”
See you,
Johannes Eber
