Friend of Democracy,
This photo might look a bit desperate. But I have a different memory of that day, some years ago. I had visited my hometown. It was a Sunday afternoon in March, and I had decided to watch the local team's soccer match (the club I had played for as a teenager). I remember finding the game beautiful to watch. The soccer was better than I had expected; at a good technical level, both teams were determined to win (as far as I remember, it ended in a draw), but it was always a fair game.
It was sport as it couldn’t be better.
This is why I love team sports so much. You invest a lot to achieve a common goal. You compete with others. Sometimes you win, sometimes you suffer defeats. But everyone plays by the same rules. And in the end, you’re not enemies with your opponent, but friends. Having a beer at the sports club.
That’s how a good democracy should work as well, right? We all play by the same rules. Yes, it can be competitive at times. But there are no real losers. Because society supports everyone.
See you in Democracy,
Johannes Eber
