How do we save democracy?
By looking not at words but at actions.
Then we will see that "free speech absolutist" Elon Musk is a supporter of those who ruthlessly suppress free speech.
In Türkiye, for example, access to the account of Ekrem İmamoğlu – the imprisoned mayor of Istanbul, leading opposition figure and main challenger of long-standing president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been restricted by Musk's social media platform X after a request from Turkish prosecutors.1 İmamoğlu account joins those of countless activists, NGOs and civil rights groups that X blocked since the mass protest movement against his arrest started in March 2025.
The truth seems to be this: Elon Musk isn't a defender of free speech. He's interested in increasing his power. Under the guise of "free speech", he's trying to prevent his platform (and thus his power) from being regulated. Because regulation could limit his power. However, where it serves his increase in power and money (for example, by collaborating with autocrats and dictators), he shuts down the possibility of expressing opinions for those who fight for freedom.
See you in Democracy!
