Hello Friend,
Have you followed the developments regarding Iran?
Probably. Just like me. They dominate world news.
What struck me about Europe in general and Germany in particular:
On Friday, the foreign ministers of France, the United Kingdom, and Germany met with their Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Geneva to discuss a change of heart regarding Iran's nuclear program. On Saturday, Donald Trump ordered the attack on Iran (more precisely, he ordered the bombing of the underground facility in Fordow, as well as the enrichment facility in Natanz and the nuclear facility in Isfahan).
The proximity in time between Europe's diplomatic efforts and the US bombing shows that there is no longer any coordination between European states and the US.
For Donald Trump, Europe's (military) power is a marginal note in global politics.
And Trump is probably not the only one who sees it that way.
🇪🇺 After the Second World War, free Europe was powerful only through the US as part of NATO. Without close ties to the US, Europe is a military dwarf on the global stage.
Trump rightly ridicules Europe's diplomatic efforts. Negotiations are rarely successful without leverage. How were the Europeans supposed to persuade Iran to abandon its nuclear program? See?
The crucial problem for Europe's future is that word will slowly get around that the US under Trump is not a credible protector of Europe's democracies if these democracies are attacked militarily.
What to do?
Europe needs its own common military. It is the only way to counter the danger that Trump's re-election has created for Europe, specifically that Putin's growing military machine might attempt to attack another European state.
The time to take this path is NOW.
See you in Democracy,
Johannes Eber
