My Dear Friend of Democracy,

I am currently staying in the German city of Hamburg. There is this old flak tower.

Flak towers were large, above-ground, anti-aircraft gun blockhouse towers constructed by Nazi Germany.

Fortunately, these times are long behind us in Germany. Today, the flak tower in Hamburg is a hotel with a capacity of 134 guest rooms and a rooftop garden that opened in July and contains 4,700 trees and shrubs.

Isn’t that a lovely conversion?
