Friend of Democracy,
Friendly behaviour can be rational. The courteous clothing salesperson generates more sales. The friendly waitress in the café receives more tips.
In public spaces, however, there is often little reward for friendliness. Giving way to others is not rational behaviour — or so economists sometimes think.
But humans are not just homo oeconomicus in the narrow sense; they are also social beings. A smile that is returned with a smile also brings added value.
For both sides.
In his 1971 book "A Theory of Justice," social philosopher John Rawls wrote that functioning societies are "a cooperative venture for mutual advantage."
In that sense: Let's give each other smiles.
See you in Democracy,
Johannes Eber
