My Dear Friend of Democracy,
You can't become friends again after shooting each other, can you?
But there must be people here in Mostar, the fifth-largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who have been trying this for 30 years. Otherwise, this city would no longer exist.
There were two civil wars in the 1990s. First, Bosniak and Croatian against Serb forces, followed by Croats and Bosniaks fighting each other. After the wars 2000 people of Mostar were dead and most Serbs had fled the city.
How to live on after so many atrocities? I don't know, and I'm so glad I never had to find out. But I do know that I have the greatest respect for those here in Mostar who strive for peace.
See you in Europe,
Johannes
