My Dear Friend of Democracy,
What is the smallest level of democracy? The partnership and the family, right?
Their members have mutual rights and obligations. And intra-family negotiation processes are a central feature of functioning families. It is the same with larger units of society.
So we can practice democracy every day. With those closest to us.
See you,
Johannes
That is exactly why families are so important. They are the smallest building block of a society. Family members learn collective decision making, structures if power, solidarity, finding compromise, mutual appreciation etc.
Multi-generational families under one roof, hardly seen anymore actually were mini mini states, with all of the above plus love and hate, plus mutual support as well as infighting. Perfect training grounds for becoming a member of the larger society.
Shrinking or even disappearing families deprive societies of new members with "boot camp training".
That is one of the reasons why new forms of family, other than the classical mom-dad-child set up, are important and should be welcome. Groups of people, who care about each other.
