The Story
Railway workers of the Ukrainian Railways
Tell me.
Ukrainian Railways (in Ukrainian: Ukrzaliznytsia, abbreviated as UZ) is state-owned, the world's sixth-largest rail passenger transporter, and Europe's third largest by route network (20,000 kilometres). It has become a lifeline in the war-torn country. In the first eight months of the war alone, Ukrainian Railways evacuated more than four million people from front-line areas.
Does Russia attack the railway?
Constantly. 530 Ukrainian railway workers have lost their lives since the beginning of the large-scale war in Ukraine. The most devastating attack yet on both railway workers and passengers: On 8 April 2022, a Russian missile strike hit the railway station of the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The strike killed 63 civilians (including nine children) and wounded 150 (including 34 children).
What is the video above about?
I took it of a photo exhibition of Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Nuremberg, Germany, (where I changed trains at the weekend) called "BahnLifeline Railway - Ukrainian Railway Workers at War". With the exhibition, DB pays tribute to the employees of the Ukrainian Railways. Since the beginning of the Russian war, almost two years ago, they have been braving the daily routine of war in Ukraine and maintaining mobility and supplies.
How To Save Democracy
The exhibition about Ukrainian railway workers shows ordinary people who do their sometimes dangerous job. This is an excellent way to convince others about democracy since it presents people who are committed to democracy. Nothing interests people more than people, and imitating thoughts and actions is a common way people shape their own lives.
