Friend of Democracy,
Sixty per cent of Gen Z adults say that they wish they could return to a time before everything was ‚plugged‘ (source and worth-reading text in The New York Times from social psychologist Clay Routledge; no paywall).
It seems that even the generation that doesn‘t know the pre-digital age firsthand is becoming increasingly aware of its downsides. For example, cluttering the time with too many devices, apps, and services creates an overall negative cost that can swamp the small benefits that each item provides in isolation.
What I need instead is time and space to think.
In an age where the digital attention economy is shovelling more and more clickbait toward us and fragmenting our focus into emotionally charged shards, the proper response is to become more mindful in our media consumption.
See you in Democracy,
Johannes Eber
